Family
Victoria (Vicky) is married to Cynthia Laird, the news editor of the Bay Area Reporter newspaper.
Cynthia was born at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley to elementary school teachers Stan and Carol Price Laird (Stan died in 1984 of cancer). She graduated from Hayward High School (Class of 1980) and from Sacramento State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Government-Journalism.
Vicky and Cynthia met in 1994, when the late Pryor Conrad introduced them while Vicky was a candidate for an at-large AC Transit director seat and Cynthia was a freelance reporter. An interview turned into a date, and while Vicky came in second out of seven candidates in the election (carrying Fremont, Hayward, San Leandro, Alameda and Piedmont) and Cynthia lost her news story because of their relationship, they were both big winners out of the race.
Vicky and Cynthia were married on February 12, 2004 on the first day of the San Francisco same-sex marriages. Their marriage was subsequently invalidated by the California Supreme Court. They were subsequently married on June 16, 2008, the first day of legal same-sex marriages, at Oakland City Hall with Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums officiating and Rep. Barbara Lee as witness. The California Supreme Court has upheld their marriage.
They live in Oakland with their Pembroke Welsh Corgi Nicky (CH Faerie Glen Snickerdoodle) and cats Puff and Espresso.
